What is Tacronic-0.1 Ointment?
Tacronic-0.1 is an ointment for the skin. Its active ingredient is tacrolimus at 0.1%, in a 10 g tube, from brand owner Johnlee Pharmaceuticals. It is used for moderate to severe atopic dermatitis in adults and people aged 16 and over when other skin treatments have not worked well enough or are not suitable. It is not a general eczema cream, and it is not for long-term continuous use.

How to use Tacronic-0.1 Ointment
Adults: apply to the rash
2 times a day
Apply a thin layer to the affected skin twice a day and rub in gently and completely. Use the smallest amount that controls the rash, and stop when the rash has cleared.

An allergic reaction
Skin where you apply it becomes infected with pus or fluid-filled cold-sore-type blisters (see a doctor)
Do not use
- Anyone allergic to tacrolimus or any ingredient
- Children under 16 (the 0.1% strength is not for children)
- People with a weakened immune system
- Skin with pre-cancerous or cancerous conditions
- Skin whose barrier is badly damaged, such as Netherton syndrome, lamellar ichthyosis or red skin over the whole body, because more of the medicine is absorbed
Ask first
- The skin has a bacterial or viral infection (it must be cleared before you start)
- You have swollen lymph nodes
- You take other medicines, especially CYP3A4 inhibitors such as erythromycin, itraconazole, ketoconazole, fluconazole, calcium channel blockers and cimetidine, if the rash is widespread
Watch for
- Important long-term safety warning: the long-term safety of this type of medicine has not been established. Rare cases of skin cancer and lymphoma have been reported, although it has not been shown that the medicine causes them. Do not use it continuously for long periods
- Avoid strong sun and UV light, including sun lamps, tanning beds and UV therapy, even when the ointment is not on that skin
- Cold sores or shingles on the treated skin, a fever or swollen lymph nodes: see a doctor
- Rare cases of acute kidney failure have been reported
- Keep it out of the eyes and mouth. Do not swallow it
Side effects seen
- Burning of the skin where it is applied, the most common effect, mostly in the first days
- Itching
- Skin redness or irritation
- Headache
- Flu-like symptoms
- Inflamed hair follicles, skin infection or an allergic reaction
Medicines and vaccines used with it
- Interaction studies have not been done for this ointment. Interactions are unlikely but cannot be ruled out
- Take care with CYP3A4 inhibitors such as erythromycin, itraconazole, ketoconazole, fluconazole, calcium channel blockers and cimetidine if the rash is widespread or the whole body is red

Store at room temperature, about 25°C; anywhere from 15 to 30°C is fine.

What is tacrolimus?
Tacrolimus is a medicine that calms the immune response in the skin. Tacronic-0.1 is a 0.1% tacrolimus ointment applied to the skin for moderate to severe atopic dermatitis in adults and people aged 16 and over.
What rash is Tacronic-0.1 used for?
It is used for moderate to severe atopic dermatitis when other skin treatments have not worked well enough or are not suitable. It is not a general rash cream. For any other rash, ask a doctor or pharmacist.
Can children use Tacronic-0.1?
No. The 0.1% strength is for adults and people aged 16 and over only. Children aged 2 to 15 have their own lower strength (0.03%), which we do not sell, and it must not be used under age 2.
How often and how long do you apply Tacronic-0.1?
Adults apply a thin layer to the rash twice a day and stop when it clears. If there is no improvement after 6 weeks, see your doctor. Do not use it continuously for the long term. This is based on the tacrolimus ointment reference prescribing information.
Do I need to avoid the sun while using it?
Yes. Avoid strong sun and UV light, including tanning beds and sun lamps, even when the ointment is not on that skin.
